PROVIDORES AND FARM GATES
These little treasure troves are dotted all over Hobart and are easily accessed. Don't settle for a mainstream supermarket, opt for a food gathering experience. In these places freshly foraged asparagus might be on offer, you could bump into an artisan cheese maker, you never know your luck. What's more you'll be assured that the produce is fresh, has often travelled minimal miles to reach the shelf, and is seasonally picked just for you.

TAS-SAFF
Tas-Saff is the saffron hub south of the equator. Terry and Nicky Noonan original sea-changers from Sydney in the late 80’s, pioneered the saffron industry in Australia. You will find Tas-Saff perched high on the hill overlooking Glaziers Bay in the idyllic Huon Valley south of Hobart. Spice collected from the fiery red stigma of the lilac crocus flowers has been valued for its’ culinary and medicinal properties for thousands of years. Tas-Saff is open for farm gate visits nearly all year by appointment.

WILLIE SMITH'S APPLE SHED
An old apple packing shed, built in 1942 and full of character, The Apple Shed is the home of Willie Smith’s Cider – just 25 minutes south of Hobart in the Huon Valley. A hive of activity year- round, the Ciderhouse naturally serves Willie Smith’s range of award-winning ciders – just a stone’s throw from the orchards the apples were grown in. Also part of the family is Charles Oates Distilling, who distils fine apple brandy and apple blanco on site. Made in Tasmania, their copper alembic Charentais still is based on a 16th century Cognac still from France – the only one of its kind in Australia.
