It was 2012 when Greg and Rachel Power moved their young family from Canberra to the middle of World Heritage listed Mount Field National Park to take on the local café. Back then, they knew that accommodation was part of their vision.
Over a decade later and after much planning, Mt Field Retreat opened right on the doorstep of the national park near the Tyenna River, much-loved by trout fishing enthusiasts. The retreat is the ideal place to rest your head after a day exploring the park. There are four self-contained one-bedroom pods sitting lightly on the landscape. Each is thoughtfully appointed and has its own personality, with local touches including Tasmanian artwork There’s a handy kitchenette with stove top, a king-size bed as well as a double sofa bed in the lounge. The ability access studio pod is designed to allow Mt Field to be enjoyed by all. The cosy lounge area has views out to the endemic tree ferns; you might spot Geoffrey – he’s the 14-foot-tall fern in the landscaped garden. Don’t be surprised if you see an endangered eastern quoll or eastern barred bandicoot scurry through the undergrowth, or a shy platypus in the Tyenna. With access to Tassie’s great food and wine, local knowledge on hand, and what the Powers describe as ‘the best place on earth’ just beyond the pod door, Mt Field Retreat is a terrific base for wild exploring. 17 Lake Dobson Road, National Park mtfieldretreat.com.au (book direct for best rates) 0467 744 357 [email protected] |
