Founded in 2018, Battery Point Distillery has its home at Lenna, a grandiose mansion built by seafaring merchant Alexander McGregor which has overlooked Hobart’s docks for close to 150 years. It stands as a reminder of the flurry of whaling, trading and shipbuilding prosperity that swirled around Hobart in the mid 1800s. At one point, the McGregors laid claim to the largest individually owned fleet south of the equator. From the glorious hand-carved sandstone walls to the ornate balustrading, understated elegance and quality reign here.
Battery Point Distillery was born from a passion for Tasmania and the respected traditions of craft whisky distilling. This small stone building in historic Battery Point is a treasure trove of small-batch, handmade whiskies slowly ageing in a collection of carefully sourced sherry, tawny and bourbon casks. Double distilled in 60-litre quantities, initially by pioneer Jack Lark – son of the Godfather of Australian Whisky, Bill Lark – and now with Luke Lawrence as the helm, each whisky batch is of a consistent high quality. With the nuances of single, double or triple cask ageing coming to life under the watchful eye of blender Louis Duckett, Battery Point Distillery’s trademark style allows whisky lovers to experience exceptional contemporary expressions of Tasmania. Complexity, maltiness, balance and harmony. Their House of Lenna Blend No. 1 Dry Gin, handmade to highlight the depth of flavour and aromatics found in Australian ingredients, is distilled out of the House of Lenna Tasmanian copper pot still. This unique gin offers a classic dry style with a careful balance of 12 hand-selected botanicals, including native Tasmanian pepperberries and a pinch of Tasman sea salt. Delivering a whole-mouth feel and perfume-like aroma, this gin promises rich herbaceous complexity, balanced to perfection so it can be enjoyed on its own, mixed with mineral water or tonic, or in a classic martini. The team also produces a pink gin made from locally sourced strawberries, and a classic, complex sloe gin using sloeberries from the Derwent Valley. Distillery tours and bottle purchases are available via the website or by appointment. 20 Runnymede Street, Battery Point batterypointdistillery.com houseoflenna.com 0461 524 681 |
