The sprawling ruins at the Coal Mines span a number of kilometres, a 25-minute drive from Port Arthur Historic Site, near Saltwater River on the north-western tip of the Tasman Peninsula. The ruins present yet another chapter in the epic story of convicts and transportation in Tasmania. A 300-metre section of track is wheelchair accessible. The other sections are rated as a Level 2 walk. Keep in mind that the ruins are unstable and fragile, so please do not climb on them. There
are a number of deep shafts. For your safety, remain behind barriers and supervise children. No booking is required and entry is free. coalmines.org.au | Open daily |
