Driftwood Restaurant likes to keep things simple. Their menu is uncomplicated and changes almost as often as the weather. They make everything themselves using seasonal prime produce and whenever possible they process all their food on site, ensuring that the best eating experience is delivered to your plate.
You’ll find a clean, casual fine-dining experience, a place where you could stop in for a mid-morning cup of coffee and a slice of homemade banana bread with maple butter, a business lunch, or relax and dine as a couple or large group of an evening. The small team of chefs endeavour to produce almost everything they can by hand in house. They make their own bread, jams, relish and chutneys and often smoke their own fish, chicken and meat smallgoods including pastrami and wallaby loins. They make most of their own pasta and portion all their red meats and fish from primal cuts or fillets, occasionally buying and breaking down quarters or whole animals to give them a wider variety of products to use throughout the menu. They use the primal cuts as steaks, meaty off-cuts and trim for burgers and sausages, bones for stock and sauce production, and any excess fats are rendered, clarified and then used on vegetables for roasting (lightly, of course) for added flavour. This hands-on approach to food reduces food wastage. The wine list is equally Tasmania focused, with a diverse range of varietals extending across the state, sourced directly from the vineyard or through local merchants. Beer and spirits are also featured prominently here, showcasing the increasing diversity of breweries and distilleries across Tasmania. There are even a couple of vegan, organic, preservative-free and zero-alcohol alternatives. The front-of-house team delivers attentive and knowledgeable service without being intrusive. The’ve been rewarded with several accolades in the Tasmanian Hospitality Association Awards for Excellence including best regional restaurant (winner 2016), best stand-alone restaurant (2019 winner), best breakfast venue (winner 2022) and best specialty restaurant (Tasmanian produce, runner-up 2022).
