Tucked away in the heart of Tasmania’s Tamar Valley amongst rolling hills, farmland and vines you’ll find the hidden vineyard, Glendale Estate.
Glendale is a historic property dating back to the late 19th century. Once an established apple orchard, the estate’s original timber buildings still stand and have been lovingly restored by owners, Chris and Cassie Payne. The original apple packing shed has been reinvented into Glendale’s boutique cellar door, which also serves as a stunning event hall perfect for weddings and other special occasions. While the building pays homage to Glendale’s historic past, the cellar door experience is like none other, offering an array of delicately produced premium cool-climate wines. Glendale specialises in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – wines that age beautifully. The cellar door offers vertical tastings, with vintages dating back to 2012. Along with an appreciation for premium table wines and reserves, Glendale is a Tasmanian household name for sparkling wine. Chris and Cassie make the wines using the méthode traditionelle process used in the Champagne region of France. The winemaking process at Glendale is never rushed – it’s more like a work of art that requires time to come alive. From vine to wine, the Glendale approach to winemaking lets the fruit do the talking. Winemaking starts in the vineyard, where Glendale’s viticulturist and winemaker Chris pays (careful) attention to the soil as well as to the grapes’ development. Tasmania is subject to a long and cool growing season with sometimes unpredictable weather. These weather changes require an ever-changing conversation between viticulturist and vine. All of Glendale’s wines are single vineyard, estate grown and made, ensuring the highest quality of wine that is ever so delightful to drink. Glendale takes a holistic approach to farming, so when not in the vineyard or arranging special events at the cellar door, Cassie tends to the garden. She grows and sources premium local produce to serve artisanal plates that pair perfectly with the select wines. Cassie and Chris share a passion for food and wine that shows in the magical fusion of flavours, aromas and textures. Expect the wine and food pairings offered at the cellar door to change seasonally if not weekly, depending on what’s in season and on the cheeses that their neighbours’ farms are producing. If you’re looking for a cellar door with a laid-back atmosphere, delicious offerings, passionate owners/winemakers, and an authentic Tasmanian backstory, Glendale Estate is the place for you. During summer, Glendale hosts family-friendly events with live music. In winter it’s the perfect spot in which to curl up next to the fire with a glass of Reserve Pinot and feel yourself slowing down and stepping back in time. Regardless of the season, Glendale Estate – the wine, the food, the scenery and the people – will amply reward you for your detour off the beaten path. 0488 033 492 [email protected] Open 7 days 12.00pm – 4.00pm |
