The Granary has stood boldly in the heart of northern Tasmania since 1830. This exquisite stay breathes luxury into a Tasmanian country experience. At Richmond Hill the Macquarie River’s flow brings calm, the manicured gardens invite stillness. The warmth of a stay in The Granary is palpable. Those seeking fresh country air and a moment of pause can find just the right recipe here.
The Granary has lived many lives. It was originally a mighty barn built by convicts from sandstone and brick carted from 20 kilometres away. Legend has it that original owner James Brumby, who arrived in 1806, was unable to successfully muster all his horses and that Australia’s wild horses were aptly named after him. Today this thick-walled beauty plays host to travellers from all over the world. The historic estate is a 20-minute drive from Launceston airport through charming countryside that whispers of what’s to come. Follow the driveway lined with heritage-listed Hawthorn hedges and The Granary will appear, set within meticulously manicured gardens. The magnificent three-bedroom house sits on the banks of the Macquarie River with sweeping views of the countryside and distant mountains beyond. It comfortably sleeps up to six guests (two queen rooms and one twin). The exceptionally comfy beds are dressed with luxurious linen for a dreamy night’s sleep. The character-filled space is appointed with two large bathrooms complete with floor heating, fluffy towels and organic products. For many, it’s the open-plan living space beneath mighty Tasmanian oak beams that enchants most. Deep-set windows and well-worn floorboards meet contemporary finishes and there’s a modern kitchen in which to cook up a delicious long-table feast. Feel like sinking into a comfy couch by the fire? Hubert & Dan is an excellent caterer nearby who can take care of an indulgent seasonal menu for you. Owners Fiona and Nick like to make sure you feel right at home. Their own homestead is a stone’s throw from The Granary so they’re usually around to take you on a free tour of the gardens or for advice on the best nearby vineyard. Both grew up on farming properties (Fiona’s not far from Richmond Hill) and eventually found themselves raising four children in the wide open spaces of Cressy. More recently, The Cottage has joined the mix of accommodation offerings at Richmond Hill. This weatherboard lodging is James Brumby’s original home, where he lived with his wife Elizabeth, who was sent to Tasmania for stealing a brass pot and pan. Both are buried at nearby Longford in the cemetery at Christ Church. Today, their former home has been reimagined into a gorgeous two-bedroom, two-bathroom stay with a spacious living area bathed in natural light. This fully self-contained cottage sleeps up to 10 guests. If you do manage to peel yourself away from the tranquil surrounds, you’ll find everything you need nearby, from Tamar Valley vineyards and award-winning a la carte menus, through to relaxed riverside dining and delicious wood-fired pizza just up the road. Then again, a 10-minute wander down to the picnic table and firepit by the river may be far enough.
