It's not everyday one gets to go looking for Tasmanian devils by torchlight with Marcos Ambrose. The former racing driver champion has just opened the doors to Thousand Lakes Lodge in the heart of Tasmania. We were fortunate to go for a sneak peek before the official opening, and let's just say, it's otherworldly up there. It's wild, raw and untamed. The lodge is located at Lake Augusta, not far from the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. Ambrose and four other investors are behind the carefully designed nine-room lodge, sitting quietly in the World Heritage Area landscape. A full story will follow...but for now here's a peak inside. Although tempting to stay in the warmth of the lodge, Ambrose insisted we venture out. Another writer mentioned the water up here is 'gin clear.' They were spot on. At Thousand Lakes Lodge it's easy to feel like you're the only beating hearts in the world. But there's plenty more. The landscape is home to wombats, platypus, thick-coated wallabies, quolls, and a healthy population of Tasmanian devils. We met this little fella pictured below on a bike ride. The mountain bikes are complimentary for those staying and looking to explore on two wheels. We may have abandoned the bikes when we saw him. Just a few minutes' drive from the lodge are cosy soft pockets....perfect for picnics. One night is just not enough. Take a look at the Thousand Lakes Lodge website - there's some great opening specials on offer. We look forward to sharing our full feature with you soon.
