LUC. is a design store representing some of the best design brands in the world, from homewares, furniture, lighting and art to fashion and accessories. Established in 2013 the store originally started in a tiny space in South Hobart but now has expanded into a beautiful waterfront warehouse space in the Salamanca area of Hobart. The historic 1800s ordnance store is a fantastic backdrop and juxtaposition for the modern clean lines of the high-end design products showcased in store.
LUC.’s owner Lucy Given is an experienced interior designer and has curated an exceptional selection of iconic design products rarely seen in one store. International brands including Artek, Vitra, Tom Dixon, iittala, Stelton, Missoni Home and Menu elegantly sit with Australian brands Dinosaur Designs, Bemboka, Acler, and emerging designers Brodie Neill (Made in Ratio) and 2Design products. Lucy has also created a new area within the space to showcase fabrics and hardware for interior design projects. Lucy’s design philosophy is based on buy once, buy well – good design doesn’t necessarily have to have a hefty price tag but it should resonate with you. Wanda Jelmini, the creative director of Missoni Home, recently visited the store and spoke of a consumer world where we buy something quickly and without thought, and when it becomes unuseful or unattractive then we just throw it away. Rather, we should have things around us that we would be heartbroken if we lost them or didn’t have them in our life. Instead of being driven by trends or price point be driven by a desire for beauty, for elegance, for longevity. People shouldn’t feel intimidated or precious about design – Lucy wants to create an environment that feels great to be in. Her staff are knowledgable and approachable and want to help you make good design a part of your everyday life. The well-known English designer William Morris is quoted as saying, ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or beautiful’ This logic sits very comfortably with Lucy’s design products, and how design should work in our lives. Lucy feels blessed to live in a state with such an incredible reputation for quality. Her next project is to elevate Tasmanian design products to the same level as the international iconic pieces already in store. To move from a craft-based industry to globally accepted and recognised design. The tide is turning and she wants to catch the wave of excellence the state is experiencing.
